Being black at Cambridge University – BBC News

As the new academic year begins at Cambridge, the university has exclusively revealed to the BBC that they have admitted a record number of 137 UK black UK students, the highest figure ever for the university and up 46 students on last year, which was also a record year.

Whilst this is a step in the right direction for Cambridge, they admit there is still a way to go. BBC reporter Ashley John-Baptiste has followed three black students who started last year through what turned out to be quite an extraordinary year.

Produced by Adele Tobe.

Filmed and edited by Rob Taylor.

Graphics by Mel Lou and Naomi Goddard.

Additional filming by Emily Brooks, James Anderson, Martin Roberts and Henry Jackson.

"Lack of ethnic diversity" I thought you had to have the grades and £££ to get in there. So if more and more black folk are getting in because of their race… isnt that racist. AND was said black students never made up more than 3% of the uni students. Well, they do make up 3% of the UK population so that is about right. What more do you want??

It's things like this that just show how left wing and woke the BBC really is. Outcomes are dependant on merit and mindset (as well as hard work ethic). Just because there are less black outcomes in higher education doesn't mean its because of institutional factors which oppress black achievement. It's just because of aspects of character and statistics show that overall, asians are the ones that achieve most because of hard work ethic. There are also higher outcomes of white achievement only because 90% of the UK is white so obviously there's going to be a lot of white people in universities. There's no need for us to divide ourselves into tribal groups like race. It just a social construct used to limit ethnic minorities. When it comes to achievement, its down to culture, not colour !

Race doesn't make ANY difference. If it did and the Uni's are racist…why are they letting in ANY black people? Why were ANY black people allowed to get a degree? This is total nonsense.

This video is amazing. It encourages me to go to Cambridge and proves that there actually might be some discussion about matters of race in a predominantly white community. Sharon saying that she misses the support system at Cambridge is heartwarming and the folks who believe that black lives shouldn’t be the focus: please rethink, because their well-being and inclusion is so important.

dont ever mention anything about white working class kids because let me tell u I know for a fact coming from experiences from them they dont have to the passion nor desire to continue on to their education, their parents don't give a doss about them, so why should we care about them

If race isn't a big deal then why are people upset that the BBC wanted to cover this? Make it make sense. If it's not a big deal then it shouldn't be a big deal – fullstop. If you don't like hearing about issues surrounding race then don't watch it. Just seems like an unwillingness to listen to people's experiences.

I can't believe the comments i'm reading! They aren't complaining, they're just sharing their experiences being a student in such a predominantly 'white' place, and I know first hand as a black british student that a lot of the time you feel out of place on your own campus.

Typical Left-collective BBC. Concerned about a few blacks at Cambridge? How about showing concern for the few whites left in East Ham or Bradford, or is that beyond the pale for snowflakes in BBC News?
